5 years ago or so, I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise. It was my first and likely my last cruise. One of the most exciting things about the cruise was when we were rerouted towards Haiti. I remember waking up incredibly early, pulling on a maxi dress and high tailing it up to the deck. For whatever reason I was convinced that this would probably be my first and only time ever laying eyes on Haiti.
To be fair, I had never had a strong desire to go to Haiti and so I didn't feel a tremendous loss at the idea of possibly never visiting. I had a general historical reverence for Haiti but knew very little outside of the bad things reported on BBC about the country. I knew of Haitian food, Haitian Americans, and of the major Haitian Earthquake, but I had never thought it would look so breathtaking. It was worth every single second I saw it. It was absolutely a dream.
In that moment, when I laid eyes on the water, the hills, the beaches, and the men in the boat, I knew that one day I would have to visit.
That day has yet to come. As I search for my next travel adventure though, my mind is definitely on Haiti.
